The ARRL Field Day began in 1933 as a way for amateur radio operators to practice emergency communications and demonstrate their skills. It has since grown into a popular annual event held on the fourth full weekend of June, where thousands of operators set up temporary stations to make as many contacts as possible over a 24-hour period. This year, Mesa County ARES will work with the Western Colorado Amateur Radio Club (WCARC) to host a Field Day event on June 28th. We will be located on the south lawn at First Christian Church (our usual meeting location) at 1326 North 1st Street in Grand Junction. In addition to the traditional HF radio stations, we will demonstrate our current EmComm technologies, such as AREDN, LoRa, VARA-FM and other data modes. By teaming up with WCARC, we hope to attract members of the public to get involved with amateur radio, especially for its EmComm and public service roles. Watch for more information, and if you have an idea that might attract new, tech-savvy young folks, let us know.
