The annual Skywarn™ Recognition Day (SRD) operating event is coming up on December 7th from 0000z to 2400z (which makes it December 6th at 1700 MST through December 7th at 1700 MST).  Skywarn™ Recognition Day was developed in 1999 by the National Weather Service and the American Radio Relay League. It celebrates the contributions that Skywarn™ volunteers make to the NWS mission, the protection of life and property.  In the past, we were able to operate on a special event callsign from the local National Weather Service office, but that was closed down during the pandemic and never started up again, at least in Grand Junction.  I’ve contacted the local office but haven’t generated much interest.  Regardless, it’s a fun activity.  I recommend that you register at their web page: https://www.weather.gov/crh/skywarn_participants if you’re interested.  SRD will include a 24-hour net and encourages participation by entrants who sign up and provide call signs and local weather conditions.  Click here for operating instructions and other information.  You can get some great contacts, especially if you don’t mind operating in the late night/early morning hours.  If you’re a weather wonk, it’s great fun.
