ARRL Field Day is coming up on June 24th and 25th! Field Day started out years ago as an exercise to take our ham radio equipment into the outdoors to evaluate our ability to set up emergency communication capabilities in an emergency. Over the years, it has evolved into so much more. Now, it’s a “contest that isn’t a contest”, a barbecue cook-off, a public relations event to bring in new hams and a chance to get together with old and new friends. Partially as a result of COVID, home stations have taken on a larger role, and digital modes are more popular than ever. Our local radio club, the Western Colorado Amateur Radio Club (WCARC) has for many years set up a camp up on the Uncompahgre Plateau and offered any hams who wished to join them the opportunity to operate Field Day up in the mountains.
